Wrightwood, Fall 1998

Summary:

Trip Report:

We all met on Highway 2 at the dirt road turnoff to Big Rock camp (Steve had a BMW car). Joe and I took the long way up (up the 2 all the way from the 210 near JPL). We had spectacular views with intermittent fog and clear blue sunshine. The others went the quick way from the 15. After meeting, we headed to Big Rock camp where we stayed for the night (it was Friday night).

Yes, that's snow on the trees.

The next morning we had breakfast then went exploring. The first couple routes we tried were either gated or ended quickly. So we ended up going down Blue Ridge Road towards Wright mountain. This is a great road with several camp grounds and ski lift crossings! Rachel and I stayed at Cabin Flat campground on a previous trip. This time we took the short road to Pine Mountain. Most of this is pretty easy, but we had some fun on a few short crawls at the top (pushing the limits of the Outback). At the top, we rested and had a snack/lunch.

Back at camp, Joe and I settled in for another night, while the rest left for home. It was another relaxing evening with a great campfire meal. The next morning, we decided to take a different route home. Going further down Rock Creek road, it quickly became a paved road with some sort of fire station not far from camp! A little surprising given that we assumed we were far from anything the last two nights. From there, we picked up the 2 and went back via 138 and the 15 (the quicker route).

Maps, books, etc.

Much of the trails we took were on an old Angeles Forest map I had (mostly for hiking).
