San Gabriel Mountains, Summer 2003

Summary:

Route/Directions:

Take Angeles Crest Highway (2) north to the Angeles Forest Highway (N3) to Mill Creek Summit and turn left onto FR 3N17 heading west. A few miles down, we turned off onto 4N24 only to camp at Big Buck Campground. Then we got back on 3N17 and went west to Indian Canyon Road (4N37) north. This led to Soledad Canyon Road and to Highway 14.

Trip Report:

We left on a Saturday and stayed one night. As with the last time I stayed at Big Buck, we were the only ones in the campground. This is a real nice campground set out on an overlook packed full of pine trees. Great views of the desert cities. Francis was a great camper, but Joe forgot a couple of essentials. Joe was challenged with keeping the tent dry (it wasn't raining).

The next day, we continued down the ridge around Mount Gleason, west on 3N17, then down the back side of the mountains north on 4N24. We hit pavement at the end of this road and headed home.

Maps, books, etc.

"Backcountry Adventures - Southern California (by Massey and Wilson) has a good description of this road - "South Coast #5: Santa Clara Divide Road" (p. 308).

"Backroad Trips & Tips" (by Harry Lewellyn) also has this trip listed as "Messenger Flats" (Area 4, CB-11, p. 246).
