Blue Ridge Road, Summer 1995
Summary:
Route/Directions:
Take I-15 north to 138 west to Angeles Crest Highway
to Wrightwood and on to Big Pines. Turn left onto
Blue Ridge Road. This road passes three campgrounds:
Guffy at 6 miles, Lupine and 10, and Cabin Flat at 12.
We went all the way to the end.
UPDATE! This road is closed to autos after Guffy Campground to
protect the Mountain Yellow Legged Frog.
Trip Report:
This was an interesting trip - part of it was on the Mountain High
ski slopes. At one point we passed under ski lifts, and later
stopped by a man who had yellow tape running across the road.
We were pretty confused until we saw the mountain bike come
screaming down the slope. The first camp (Guffy) was at the top and
fairly popular. The second camp (Lupine) was burned out and deserted.
The last camp (Cabin Flat) was in the valley near the stream
with lots of trees. This was very nice and our choice for camp.
After setting up camp, we went for a hike on a trail that
started at the campground. That afternoon, mountain thunderstorms
rolled through so I set up a lean-to to sit under and read or nap.
The next morning, we packed up and headed home.
Maps, books, etc.
The most I could find on this road is in "California Camping"
(Foghorn Outdoors). It describes the three campgrounds
Guffy, Lupine, and Cabin Flat.
